For those of you that don’t know, my days of relaxing are mostly spent with my pals who are in the entertainment business. Needless to say, they do their share of venting. The articles I write translate their rants into helpful tips for you. Therefore, I’m back again with another segment to help all you aspiring artists out there. This one is a little more focused than previous articles. This piece is dedicated to the all-important headshot. A headshot is the main marketing tool actors have to promote themselves, kind of like a business card. If you receive a stained, crumpled, poorly designed business card, are you going to use their service? In turn, if you hand someone a low quality, horribly, shot, creased headshot, do you really think you’ll get a callback? These photographs will be on file with casting directors and agencies for a long time, and when they refer to them, you want to wow them each time they see it. My friends in show business, who will remain nameless, have sifted through hundreds if not thousands of headshots ranging from great to, well, less than great. Your photograph must grab the attention of those viewing it, and the ones they remember doing so had these four things in common.

1. You must be the focus of your headshot. Notice the word “head” in headshot. That should be the focus, your head, and then your body. Not the vivid colors of the landscape, mysterious shadows, distracting lighting or alluring background. Not bold jewelry, makeup or clothing. It would actually be better if you couldn’t make out the background at all. As soon as a casting director or agent sees your headshot his or her eyes should be drawn to you, and should stay on you until they put the photograph down. They shouldn’t even notice where the picture was taken or what you were wearing. Everything else should be neutral.

2. Your pose in the headshot should be natural. As an actor, you should be able to figure something out. It’s about being creative and original without overdoing it. Don’t dress up like a cowboy and get on a mechanical buller, which points back to the previous tip. The photograph shouldn’t appear planned. It should present you in a natural position or moment. Headshots for actors need to have an open quality so that an agent or casting director can see you acting in multiple roles.

3. When describing someone’s facial features, usually what comes up first are the eyes. This should tell you something. If the main focus of an actor headshot is the head, upon which part of the head should the photograph focus? The eyes! I could go into scientific reasons for doing this, like everyone’s eyes are unique, but I won’t. Channel your emotions and express them via your facial expressions and your eyes. Convey your feelings through the picture. Use your eyes to capture the moment and attention of the observer. Don’t just make the casting director sense your emotion, make that person feel what you felt as the picture was being taken.

4. Now, to really implement any of these tips into your actor headshots, you’re going to need a good photographer that you feel comfortable around. Comfort is important, because to really bring out the best in you, there needs to be a level of trust that comes with comfort. Trust will make it a lot easier to let the photographer do his job, and for you to express your emotion. You have a short time to create a product that has to sell. If it doesn’t, you don’t get the job. When searching for the photographer that fits you, be sure that they are experienced and competent. You don’t want to leave anything to chance so don’t cheap out or experiment with a novice…unless you discover a photographic prodigy.

Actor headshots are not the most important thing in your acting arsenal, your acting is. Your actor headshots are more like the icing on the cake, the attractive packaging or like I said before, the business card that will suggest your ability. If you show professionalism in all things you do, one can only believe your craft will live up to that standard. After a fantastic 9 months, I thought now would be a good time to talk about paying attention to your portfolio – keeping an eye on your holdings, monitoring your watchlists, pulling profits and getting rid of losers or underperformers. It’s ironic but during great times like these, when it seems like all of your stocks are going up, investors can form bad habits or get lazy. Even bad decisions can sometimes get rewarded in a buller market.

But when the market stops going straight up, that’s when you can really get into trouble. So you need to keep paying attention and exercise common sense over your portfolio. And as the title suggests, there’s no particular magic in making money (or keeping it), just good old-fashioned common sense. The trick is exercising it! Deciding on what stocks to get into is, of course, important. But once you’re in, it doesn’t mean your work is over. Whatever your stocks are, whether they be actual holdings or stocks you’re considering, don’t stop monitoring the fundamentals of those stocks.

What I mean is: If one of the criteria for getting into a stock in the first place was that it had a low Debt-to-Equity ratio, but you then saw that ratio change to an unacceptable level (a level that would not have put it on your radar screen in the first place), then you should consider getting out of that stock and looking for a new stock to replace it. One that currently does meet your criteria.

For instance, let’s say that you use the Zacks Rank as a timing indicator and you look at the Zacks #1 Rank List for immediate movers. If in a few weeks, earnings estimates are moving down and Zacks Ranks it a Zacks #4 (‘sell’) Rank, take note and consider dumping it. Sure it was a Zacks #1 (‘strong buy’) Rank, but it’s not a Zacks #1 Rank (or Zacks #2 (‘buy’) Rank) anymore. Think about it, if you never would have gotten into a Zacks #4 Rank in the first place, why would you now want to hold onto one? That’s using your common sense.

What if you’re a momentum investor and you generally look for stocks trading within 10% of its 52-week high (a great item by the way) and it suddenly falls below that level? Well, if you’re only interested in focusing on stocks within 10% of its high and it’s now 15% or 20% (or more) off its high … then move on. The momentum has seemingly shifted and so should your focus.

And don’t convince yourself to hang onto your losers either. If a company reported bad earnings and the stock is down –8% to -10% against you, get out. Don’t let your love of a stock (or denial) ruin your portfolio. Almost every big losing trade anybody has ever had in their portfolio (-50%, -60% or even –90% or more) could have been exited when they were just beginning to crumble.

If you get out and it zips back up, you can always get back in if you want. But if it keeps going down, you’re just losing more and more money. And the price you could have gotten out at earlier is now a price you only wish you could get out at now.

So once you’ve found the items that have proven to work well for you in picking profitable stocks, be sure to monitor those values. And if they no longer meet the winning criteria, get rid of them fast and find new ones that do.

I find that many of the couples that I meet with for their wedding nature photography are not particularly excited about having an engagement nature photo session. Typically, one person is really nervous about having their nature photo taken. The idea of having a session devoted to creating images of just the two of them can sometimes cause anxiety and trepidation. And yet, this is exactly why every couple should consider having an engagement session. More often than not, the couple has never had any good nature photos taken of just the two of them (your average snapshots don’t count). Everyone needs practice in front of the camera. By taking an hour session some time before the wedding day, you will feel much more comfortable in front of the camera. It’s a great way to get the nerves out before your big day. Besides the two of you getting valuable camera practice, you’ll get to know your nature photographer better. You’ll learn about how your nature photographer shoots and your nature photographer will learn more about your personalities, what you like, what you don’t like, and so on. This gives the nature photographer valuable insight into your personalities and style and gives you plenty of time to tell them more about your plans and preferences for the wedding day. Do your research ahead of your travels… some international rail and travel cards must be purchased before you arrive in a country.

Take a local bus line… some can substitute for an expensive sightseeing tour. Many cities have buses that pass by all the big sites. Ask about them at the tourist office.

If you’re traveling cross country, consider taking an overnight train or flight. It could be cheaper than a daytime flight or train, and you will save money by not needing a room for the night. Sure the “red-eye” flight might be a little uncomfortable, but think of how much that b&b cavan room would cost. If it’s an overnight train you’re taking, you can buy a sleeper berth for a lot cheaper than a b&b cavan room.

Stop at a local visitors center. They can tell you about local money savers…. tell you if there are free days at museums and give you information on city passes. The visitor’s center might have coupons for discounts; they’ll at least have brochures and free maps. Check with these visitors centers online before your trip to see if there are things you should purchase before you leave.

A museum pass can save you money AND time. You won’t have to waste valuable vacation time standing in line, and sometimes, time is money. If a museum pass won’t be a good value for you, you can call or e-mail most popular museums for a reservation. You’ll get an appointment for an entry time and walk right past those lines.
